“Zazen-Kutsu” Zen Meditation at Ochill Kyoto
Meditation for Those Wishing to Deepen “Zazen”
Carte bancaire requis lors de la réservation
In the past, caves or hollowed-out rock formations in the mountains were referred to as “Zazen-Kutsu”, where esteemed monks would concentrate on their Zen meditation practice.
Ochill Kyoto could be likened to a contemporary urban version of the Zazen-Kutsu. Located deep within narrow alleyways, its dim and tranquil atmosphere resembles that of the traditional meditation caves.
While accessible to non-monastic individuals, this Zen Meditation Cave remains authentic and suitable for serious practitioners. It is not tailored for tourists but serves as a dedicated space for profound meditation practices.
It provides a space for abstract conversations about meditation, about humanity. A place dedicated to deepening one's Zen meditation practice, catering to those who wish to delve further into the art of meditation.
Tosei Shinabe (Zen monk)
He has been practising zazen for eight years at Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple.
He currently instructs zazen to others on a daily basis.

On the day of the event, please bring cash for donation.
... Donation, known as "kisha" in Japanese, refers to the act of giving joyfully. It's a concept used in various religions, emphasizing a one-way act without expecting anything in return. In Zen Buddhist practice, giving joyfully is understood as a form of training to let go of attachments. The participation fee is based on the assumption of ¥3,000 (paid upon reservation) plus a donation (in cash on the day of the event). This is because practicing zazen, or seated meditation, is considered a personal journey towards living freely and consciously. It's believed that monetary value should not be defined by anyone other than the practitioner themselves.
In our daily lives, we often consume things with predetermined values without giving much thought to it. When the value is pre-defined, we don't need to consider its worth; we simply accept it. This creates a sense of ease and security as there's no room for discrepancy between the giver's intention and our own. However, through deep zazen practice, we come to realize that we are inherently boundlessly free. No matter what others say, we alone are responsible for choosing our path, and relying on others for reassurance is only a temporary paralysis. Being free means taking responsibility for ourselves and defining the value of our own time and life.
For those of us who aren't accustomed to the culture of donation, it may seem troublesome. Nevertheless, we adopt the practice of donation for the reasons mentioned above.

Participation in this event is limited to those with experience. On the day, we will engage in 45 minutes of Zazen.
“Zazen-Kutsu” is partially in the style of a 'zendo', eliminating uselessness and promoting a deeper meditative state. Please note that you cannot bring smartphones and digital devices into the meditation room.
Strong fragrances can also disturb the tranquility of the space. Please cooperate by being mindful of fragrances on the day of the event, including perfumes and pre-meal odors.

“ChaKō” / New Japanese-style Meditation - Tea Smoking Ceremony- (Exclusive booking)
The Contemporary Tea Meditation, a nicotine-free smoking using only tea leaves.
Carte bancaire requis lors de la réservation
For over 400 years, the Japanese smoking pipe ‘Kiseru’ culture has been cherished as both a tea utensil and a unique smoking device in Japan. In tea ceremonies, guests were offered a smoke as a gesture of hospitality, placed on a ‘Tobacco-Bon’. It is said that patterns were created with tobacco ash, which guests would admire together.
“ChaKō”refers to a new experiential practice of “Tea smoking”, which utilizes the principles of hookah (shisha) but exclusively with only tea leaves. It's neither for drinking nor burning, providing the world’s first novel sensory experience.
In an era where tobacco smoking preferences are being phased out, this non-nicotine smoking experience offers a new way to enjoy tea, previously absent in Japanese tea culture. We provide a reinterpreted smoking ritual, based on the principles of traditional tea ceremony, through the smoking tea utensil “Kemuri-Kojoku” (煙小卓 : small table for smoke).
